In 1983 Dr. Robert Loeb, a retired dentist, was challenged when
his beloved pet keeshond, Keesha, developed severe hot spots. Also known as
summer sores or moist eczema, hot spots can often be caused by flea bites and
are created by a dog chewing or scratching a particular area of his body. This
causes the hair in this particular area to fall out and red, raw, infected and
sometimes oozing skin lesions to appear.
The veterinarian’s cure was to
shave off Keesha’s long, thick coat, cleanse the affected areas and treat her
systemically with steroids and antibiotics. He also suggested that Dr. Loeb give
her routine baths with a specialized medicated shampoo at home until her
condition was under control. Dr. Loeb felt uncomfortable having Keesha's hair
shaved off and treating her with systemic steroids. He certainly did not mind
giving her medicated baths but after the first few he realized there had to be a
better way. He had been thinking about building a bathing system for a long time
and this was a perfect opportunity.
Using a pump and an improvised
filter, he gathered items which he put together to make his first animal bathing
system. This prototype produced a vigorous, combing action spray of medicated
shampoo solution which penetrated through Keesha’s unshaved coat and down to her
skin. He concentrated the spray on the infected areas which aided in debriding
the dead, scabby skin and produced an invigorating, massage like action that
stimulated blood circulation to those areas. Dr. Loeb repeated this treatment
every other day for three baths. The morning after the first treatment, the
infected exudate was gone and he could visually see a great improvement. The
morning after the second treatment he could see healthy granulation tissue
forming at the affected areas and by the third bath he could see new hair
growth.
Dr. Loeb had such great success with his bathing system that he
decided to pursue its development. For the next six years he worked on modifying
his bathing system for safety, durability and compatibility in the professional
pet bathing industry. He consulted veterinarians and other pet professionals and
learned as much as he could about the industry. Some veterinarians, like Dr.
Gary Gallerstein and Dr. Bill Henderson of Escondido, California, welcomed him
into their hospitals to learn about this new state-of-the-art way of bathing
animals.
In 1991 Dr. Loeb and Dr. Norm Costello formed HydroSurge, Inc.
Dr. Costello had bought one of Dr. Loeb’s prototypes in 1986. He was not only
impressed with it’s therapeutic value, but because he owned three boarding
kennels, he was also interested in the labor, water and product savings the
system provided. With Dr. Costello as a partner, Dr. Loeb designed a safe and
marketable animal bathing system for veterinarians, pet groomers, animal
shelters and kennels, etc.
With continued research and development, the
original HydroSurge® Deluxe Power Bather became the only Underwriters
Laboratories listed animal bathing system in the professional pet industry. To
this day, there are no other animal bathing systems in the industry that qualify
for this important safety listing.
In 1994, after extensive research and
professional consultation, HydroSurge, Inc. developed a line of pet shampoos
that contain the highest quality, human grade ingredients and work exceptionally
well with the HydroSurge® Bathing Systems as well as for hand
bathing. HydroSurge®, Power-Bath® and Body shampoo
products are known for their attractive product labels and luxurious fragrances.
In the year
2000, HydroSurge, Inc. introduced the BathProTM 2000 unit, a
non-electrical, non-recirculating bathing system with exclusive, patented
InjectAirTM technology. Not only did this system answer the demands
of many small animal pet professionals, it also opened the door to a new
industry; the wonderful world of horses and livestock. Today, while nearly six
thousand HydroSurge® Bathing Systems are being used at veterinary
hospitals, pet grooming salons, boarding kennels, animal shelters, horse stables
and by livestock exhibitors worldwide, HydroSurge continues to propel the
industry into the next generation of bathing systems.
